Jake is up to date on all shots and is on heartworm prevention.

Adopted by scp volunteer fosterer after four months. Everyone is thrilled!
Will update with story in January. |
Fully recovered from heartworm treatment this past summer, Jake is now an active and confident little dog. Loves to go to the dog park and hang out with his two Rottweiler friends, chasing balls and chasing his rubber chicken at home. Favorite game is tug-of-war. After he gets acquainted with people, his little tail just wags a hundred miles a minute, though in the beginning he tends to be somewhat reserved and shy. He is somewhat discriminating with some dogs, especially in large numbers in a gathering, though his confidence is much improved. Is good with cats. A somewhat high-strung, but easy, very loyal dog to have around. Rarely barks, is not unreasonably demanding, adaptive and learns quickly. Not recommended for a home with small children. He is crate trained. Jake would be perfect for someone who wants a small, lively, entertaining companion for nice long walks around town and to travel with.

Jasper is up to date on all shots and on heartworm prevention.
 |
Jasper was a stray and misses his family but is adjusting well to his new home. He is social with other dogs. He is not totally laid back but is not hyper and has a medium activity range. He is cat friendly and child friendly. He is learning his new name and comes when called. Likes to swim, play fetch, and play with his humans. He has no bad habits.
11.10.11 Jasper is staying with another volunteer while his main volunteer is on vacation. Sindy reports that he is a wonderful guest in her home and an all-around great little guy!!

Callie is up to date on all shots and was spayed late October. She is a petite and beautiful, affectionate, calico kitty that would love to find her forever pal in life. She is currently fostered by a kind-hearted couple who found Callie quite literally starving at refuse center. They took her under their wing by taking her to the vet and dealing with a variety of problems that came as a result of her environment. They gave her all her vaccines and even had her spayed at their own expense. She is now a healthy, well-adjusted cat. As they already have an indoor dog and are basically dog-oriented family, they are providing a safe and warm place for her outside their home, with the thought that Callie really needs to find a home with someone whose home is best suited for kitties.
Won't you please consider opening your heart to this sweet girl?

Jasmine is an extremely friendly and affectionate kitty. She loves to be with her person, following you where you go. If you don't know where she is, just call out "Jasmine" and she'll meow and come running :) She doesn't mind being brushed or bathed. She uses the litter box every time with no accidents and is a good eater. Jasmine likes every person she meets! She is a roommate with Precious, another adult cat. She has not met any other cats or dogs - yet - but is laid back enough that there should be any issues. Jasmine will make a wonderful pet for her family. She is just a happy and friendly girl.

Precious is a sweet shy girl, that enjoys being held and petted. She needs patience and lots of love to come out of her shell, but enjoys being brushed and doesn't mind a bath. She uses the litter box every time with no accidents. Precious hasn't been eating much dry food, so I've started supplementing that with canned food several times each day. She is looking for a family with lots of love to give her that all-important forever home.

Charm is up to date on all shots and is on heartworm prevention. |
Newest update 10.25.11: Charm comes to her name when called and has been no problem for her foster volunteer, making herself at home with quiet contentment. Her coloration would almost make "Patchwork" a natural name for her and a popular quilt is a "charm quilt" so it all fits. She has her own doorless kennel on the back deck now with a warm pad for chilly nights. Good with children and very polite, Will not jump on furniture, she prefers to sit on the sidelines during rough house activities. She likes to play fetch and swim. Eager to please and obedient. Sits on command. Loves the company of people but is fine when left alone. Charm will make a good addition to a family or a single home.

Miss Stella, a calm, cool, collected girly girl, filled with poise and grace - a beautiful laid back sweetheart was waiting for her forever home. After we thought she had found just that home, we learned that was not the case this last week. NOW, we know for a fact she has been successfully adopted!! An early Thanksgiving present for our scp volunteers!!
Stella is very sweet, easy going, playful, outgoing, friendly, loving and quiet. At this point, she doesn't really have a favorite toy, though she does love to play. We're working on house training. Loves to walk on a leash, which is generally a half hour twice daily. There are no negative traits. Comes when called and is learning other commands. Cat-friendly. Loves to be groomed. Good with toddlers and small children. Likes other dogs. Exhibits no separation anxiety at all. She doesn't use a crate.
Eats at will and has a good appetite. She's allowed to sleep where ever she wants and is allowed on furniture.

This lil guy is so laid back, quiet and very gentle.. He does not jump up on you and just is not a hyper dog. He will make a wonderful companion. |
Although Teddy's foster volunteer was certainly not looking for a second dog, Teddy wasted no time creating space in their home and hearts. Look at the photos and see why he was such a perfect fit for their home. Sometimes one just has to know when to give in to love . . .

Spayed, housetrained, up to date with shots, not good with kids, good with dogs, and not good with cats. |

Hi! My name is Sasha and I was one of the first kittens to be adopted from the 'New' Monroe County Animal Shelter 6 yrs ago by my missionary folks. I was raised indoors and out doors along with my 3 best dog friends. I'm happy to take a stroll if you'd like as I often do with my dog friends. I am healthy, have all my shots, negative for Felv /Fiv, protected from fleas/ticks, am litter box trained. I enjoy being brushed often to keep my beautiful coat from matting...I was always around adults, and prefer a home that does not have young children. My yearly vaccina-tions are due June 2012. I would love to be a single cat house companion. For the last 2 yrs I have lived with my house sitter because my folks were called to rescue 6 starving children in Honduras and my house sitter is getting married in Nov and will be moving out of the house . . . so it is best for me to find a new loving, caring lap & home. My spirit is sweet--Won't you PLEASE ADOPT ME????

| Lemon captures the hearts of those who meet him with his friendly, sweet disposition; a definite sweetheart. He is cat friendly, house trained, loves people, shows no aggression at all. He gets along with other dogs and thinks he is a lap dog. Prefers to sleep with his human and another dog buddy and even though he has very short legs he manages to jump up on a queen size bed which is very comical. He does well on a leash. He is learning his new name and seems to prefer Le'Mon to Lemon! Understands the word "no." He was a stray but must have come from a multi animal home as he truly loves the company of other dogs, cats and people. |
 |
Newsflash!!! On 10/27 Lemon found his forever home with a family of 4 children and parents who are from Madisonville, and former Bassett Hound lovers. Lemon met them, by chance, this morning at Rural Vale Elementary School in Tellico Plains, TN. Doc McEntee was presenting a short talk with the Boys and Girls club about what the students could do to help the shelter. Lemon accompanied her, because, well because he just loves kids. As he patiently waited in the hallway before his presentation, parents and children arrived and Lemon wasted no time. He wagged his tail, wagged his back side, rolled over on his back for a tummy rub, and cuddled up with any child that stopped to see him. He was working the floor! And, it worked, several parents stopped and noted his antics, big ears, and lovable disposition. Then, it happened. A parent really, really wanted Lemon, insisting that she adopt him today!! As of this writing, Lemon is now in his forever home, being loved to pieces, strutting his stuff and changing a family's life...forever. They have great plans for him...to grow up with their children, be the father's co-pilot while on errands, and a constant companion to the whole family. Note in the photo how he has 'leaned' into the new situation, giving only love and wiggles and receiving so much more.

Even though Olympia did not fit the profile of an adult that is one of scp's criteria, as an scp volunteer, Diane T. had the option to foster the dog that she had found abandoned. Ollie, as Diane calls her, was turned into the shelter, given a health check and spayed by the shelter then turned over to Diane to foster and help Ollie get through some of her fears.
Ollie found her forever home on Oct. 19.

This little guy got a "bad rap" early in his search for a new home as he didn't get along with other dogs in his original non-scp foster home. Ever heard of the phrase "little dog syndrome"? Well, this is what our little Mannie had coming into rescue life. He is an extremely nice little boy and just needs to check out his canine "kinfolk" beforehand, which should not be a problem. We want rescues to fit into your life as much as we want them to be with you!
Precious - scp/outside rescue |

Precious is a lovely little girl. She is house trained and has learned to use the doggie door. She is good on a leash, excellent with children and toddlers, good with other dogs and puppies, and she is cat friendly. Precious loves to sit in your lap and give affectionate kisses; she is well mannered when left alone and doesn't get in the trash or dig in house plants. She'll bark if someone comes to the door or if there is unusual activity outside but other than that she is quiet. She loves to go for rides with you in a car. Since she is a mini schnauzer, she will require regular grooming.

Owner/guardian surrender: Good with children and elderly. Both Muffin and Precious are both extremely sweet and docile according to their foster volunteer. Though it did not work out that these two were kept together, it looks very promising that Precious will be finding her forever home in the near future.

Went to Rolling Rescue to upstate New York. Beautiful boy!! Whoever adopts him
will be very fortunate.

Lucy was part of a hoarding case and needed TLC to recover from that ordeal. She was spayed and had a little surgery to remove a growth on her mouth and recovered nicely in her foster home with Norma S. She is one of our first foster dogs. |

Lucy made a complete turnaround in her life in foster care and was a regular at the shelter as a second chance pals ambassador with a new sparkle in her eye for many weeks. She's a lot more energetic and happy now that she's shed a few pounds. Obviously, working with the public as she does, her temperament is fantastic, though she does need a big break to go to her forever home. A big thanks goes out to Norma for making such a difference in this girl's life!!
Dateline 9.09.11: Lucy has been adopted by a grandmother who has her grandchildren visit regularly. Lucy loves children and it sounds like she will be Queen for many days in her new home!

9.03.11 ~ From Buttons' foster volunteer: "I just wanted to send you a note on how Buttons is doing. He is a super nice pup, very mellow not at all what you would expect from a 2-year-old Jack Russell. He is affectionate to young children, he is housebroken (hasn't had 1 accident), he can sit when told and we are also working on teaching him to 'sit pretty." I'm going to try and get a picture of him sitting pretty, it will make a good 'mug' shot for him :) He is quiet, only time I have heard him bark is when someone knocked on the door. He uses the doggie door like he has used one all his life. He is non-aggressive to other dogs, very obedient, likes to be in the company of people but can be left alone with out issues. Thanks for the chance to foster him.
9.06.11 ~ from Button's scp volunteer: I got Buttons on Aug. 30 as a foster for 2nd chance pals. I baby sit my 2 1/2 yr old grandson, he was at the house that day, also my 7yr old step son was visiting. When I bring in a new dog I always use caution when introducing the kids. Buttons is a reserved dog, doesn't jump on you, doesn't get on furniture, but when the kids came into the room his personality changed, they got covered in kisses, he laid down on his side and allowed them to love on him. I allow my dogs to sleep with me and with a little coaching Buttons will jump on the bed. My grandson was cranky one afternoon, didn't want to take his nap . . . until Buttons jumped on the bed with us. My grandson laid down next to him and they both slept for a couple hours. Since my daughter's dog had passed away this summer there was a empty hole in their family and when I told her about how my grandson and the pup got along so well she started paying more attention to Buttons. Then when her 4 year old step son (who is afraid of dogs) didn't show any fear even when Buttons crawled in his lap, that sealed the deal. Her husband called me about adoption without her knowledge then when she expressed a desire to adopt, it was as if it were meant to be. They plan on adopting him this Friday. He will be an excellent addition to the family.
p.s. My daughter has already asked me to puppysit Buttons along with my grandson so he won't be left at home alone while they are at work. So I guess I have a new grandpuppy named Buttons. I just wanted to let you know what a happy ending this has been.
Thanks Sindy

His scp foster volunteer reports that Jamaica is a very outgoing, confident and friendly boy. Loves people and other dogs. Totally non-aggressive. Shows no signs of separation anxiety. He is crate trained. Does not bark unnecessarily. He loves to run and play with other dogs and may likely need a home that has a large fenced yard or a place where he can exercise. His temperament is that of an indoor family dog.
8.31.11 Jamaica's off to a new foster home that is considering adoption. To no fault of his own, his previous foster's elder dog (14 yo) was having territorial issues. Many times, fostering is finding out what is right for both the dog and the volunteer. Jamaica was adopted two days after his foster brought him home - a perfect match for their family.

I am a sweet, 2-year-old golden lab mix. I love all people, even babies and toddlers, and everyone seems to love me. I get along well with other dogs, and I think cats are ok, too. I am completely housebroken and well behaved, love car rides, need daily walks, am a quick learner, and I especially love belly rubs and snuggling with my humans. When I came to my foster home, I was extremely anxious when left alone, but my foster mom has been working with me to make me understand that being alone is not a bad thing. She says that I am making good progress, but that it would be best if I go to a forever home where I don't have to spend a lot of time alone. So, if you are looking for a new companion who would love to spend most of her time with you, we should be a perfect match! I am not at the shelter, but my foster mom would be happy to bring me to the shelter so we could meet.
Postscript: Bailey came into our program as a Rolling Rescue that did not materialize. As it turned out, Bailey was only 9 mo. old; her age was listed 2+ years. Though our scp program criteria calls for fostering adult dogs, we want to do what is best for both the dedicated MCFA volunteers and the animals they find themselves rescuing. Age cannot always be the criteria, though it is scp preference. |
We are delighted that Bailey found her forever home! Thank you Carol for your persistence in helping Bailey "grow up!" Here's Bailey with her new family!! |

Lady with her new family
Written by Lady's foster volunteer, Doc McEntee:
Lady Bug is too long of a name for this quick, energetic dog. "Lady" loves to be where people are. In fact, she insists on hanging out with humans. She is eager to please, tries to listen when told not to get into the trash or climb over the half Dutch door. She could care less about cats or chickens, loves to eat and usually gets along with our 3 other dogs. She so much wants to be part of the family/ herd, she works hard not to have accidents in the house, or bark at that strange car going by. She probably was house broken, for she runs outside to do her business when the doors open. She wants to sleep on the couch and always has her tail wagging. Once outside, she has proven to stay around, but leashes well on the walks through the woods. Super affectionate and well behaved, most of the time.
Ten days later: My little feet are dancing all over the floor!! Folks from area code 865 are inquiring about Lady!! I've talked to the potential owner, and she seems really really interested. Since Lady still has stitches from spaying, she can't get/pick up dog until at least Friday....at the shelter. This is the coolest program!!!

She was sent to SPCA in Rochester NY to find her
forever home on 8.3.11. She won over all those
who met this Marley twin!
Update: August 7, 2011
We are thrilled to announce that Rose has been adopted after only being available for adoption in the SPCA for less than two days!! |

Bella had been living with our foster home-check volunteer for quite a number of months with a couple of adoptions that just didn't pan out for this lovely girl. She has found just the right person for her and is now in her forever home. |

Marla (aka Molly) - scp/Shelter (found by owners 11 days after coming to shelter) |
 |
Our first real success story occurred just ten days after the program started! The shelter received a nice little elderly dachshund who they named Marla. The staff thought Marla was about seven years old and she fit second chance pals profile of being reasonably healthy and our goal for animals five years and up.
|
Marla had been picked up and turned in to the shelter as a stray. She was beyond the legal 3-day hold the shelter is required by law to keep lost animals. We moved quickly to get into foster care. She was monikered Molly by her foster mom, Doc McEntee, and proved to be a real love . . . but as Doc told us, she was constantly looking out the window or in the yard for her true owners, virtually saying, "This is all well and good of you to take care of me, but when can I go home?"
Late this afternoon, her owners called from Vonore to claim "Dixie," who we find out is actually 13 years old. The facts are that the shelter is a very busy place during the summer. An elderly dog like this may have easily slipped through the cracks by either being a very sweet dog adopted out to someone else where there would be no recourse or euthanized due to overcrowding.
We are happy that Dixie will be reunited with her family, people who have obviously loved and taken good care of her. We still do not know the whole story as to how she became a lost dog, but many times animals are lost in stormy weather and maybe that is how she lost her way.
Thanks goes to Doc for her heart of gold and helping give this precious dog a second chance!
| Jedi - Rolling Rescue assisted by scp |
 |
Just as the program was starting, I was asked if I might take a sweet little Rottweiler mix puppy (4 mos. old) out of the shelter over the weekend as he was due to go to a rescue up in Connecticut.
Well, okay . . . this was my first foster experience in at least 15 years and since I was getting myself into second chance pals, thought I'd better have a go at it!
|
I picked up the little guy and even though he had been bathed at the shelter, he still smelled had that "shelter odor." I got him home, brought him in the house and he ran right into our pantry and peed and pooped, which did not impress me in the least. Well, first order was to clean up and get him in our dog wash, using the super cheap shampoo I've been using for all my Rotties (even my grand champion show dog, Rusty) and for myself. Makes their hair shine like coal and they don't itch, which this little boy was doing.
Well, little Jedi, turned out to be a lot of fun. He learned to walk up and down the stairs, which was huge for him as he was terrified. After carrying him up and down the steps (30+ lbs.), I would carry him halfway and he learned to go up and down the rest. Next thing I knew he was scampering up and down the stairs with our Rottie, Kadie.
Being a puppy, he was all licky-licky to her, she let him know when enough was enough, but was never mean to him. As he learned to respect, he gained a lot of confidence in those few days. When I dropped him off back at the shelter for his trip up north, I admit it broke my heart to see him out in the puppy pen watching me as I left and crying his heart out . . .
Probably, the nicest compliment was said after he went to his rescue, "He smelled so clean!!" I have to admit, that made my day . . . Thanks to Sue McDuff for sending my this photo, as I did not save one of him myself.
